Financial Peace University

Disclaimer: This post is for the super nerdy who are interested in our journey to financial freedom. Sorry, no house updates or super cute things I want to buy or yummy recipes in this post! Just the day-to-day hum drum of our not-so-boring life.

As if Patrick and I aren't busy enough right now (between work and CPA exams and house projects), we have decided to take Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University every Sunday night for the next 2 1/2 months. Ugh! I mean, seriously, who wants to go and talk about finances every Sunday night for 2 hours versus watching NFL football?!

Umm... we do! Okay, not really but we feel as if this football sacrifice will benefit us positively over the long run. We've been doing the cash envelope system and been paying off debt using the Debt Snowball since Janaury but found sometime this summer that we were struggling to stay on course and needed a little extra support so we signed up for FPU.

After Week 1 we decided that signing up for FPU had been a terrific decision. We are grouped with 11 other people in similar situations who have become the support system we were hoping for. They have wonderful ideas on ways to save money (ie. E-Mealz) and all have different life experiences for us to learn from (ie. don't speed on the way to class... Dave probably wouldn't be happy about a $175 ticket for speeding to get to class on time).

So last night, after a long drive back from Arkansas, we attended our second week of FPU which was all about relationships and money--money in marriage, money when you're single and how to teach your children about money. We definitely would have preferred to stay home to do things around the house (and relax) but I'm pretty sure last night's class was one of the best in the series. Luckily Patrick and I have the same beliefs about money and rarely have an argument about it but we still learned a lot especially when it came to how to teach children about money. It's always been important to us that our future children understand that it's through hard work and a good work ethic that you become wealthy--not by holding out your hand and leaning on others. We do not want to raise spoiled rotten, greedy children.

"For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." 1 Timothy 6:10

The lessons Dave taught last night were very powerful for us and we learned a lot about what we DO want to teach our children and the behaviors and morals we DON'T want them to have. (Our children are probably going to think we're the meanest people ever! Ha!)

As we enter this new week we are looking forward to tweeking our budget in an attempt to find a little extra money to apply towards our debt! Isn't that exciting?! (It is our greatest hope that our future children will enter the world into a debt-free family). It's time for us to buckle down so we can get the most possible out of this class. Afterall, if we're going to miss NFL football it better be for a good reason!
